Description

Assists Project Engineer in surveying and designing projects; performing traffic studies; reviewing project plans and specifications; and data collection.  Responsible for performing inspections of public infrastructure projects under construction.  Assists other department personnel as required.

 

Pay Rate: $20 - $22 per hour

Flexible hours

16-20 hours per week during school year

40 hours per week during summer and school breaks

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists Project Engineer in development of maintenance and repair projects.  Assists in surveying, preparation of plans and specifications, and bid package preparation.  Drafts detailed dimensional drawings; calculates quantities of materials; develops detailed cost estimates.

Completes basic computer data management and mapping projects.

Performs traffic studies. Installs traffic monitoring devices; collects and tabulates data.

Assists the Project Engineer in reviewing public infrastructure project plans and specifications prepared by architectural/engineering firms.  Verifies existing field conditions, checks calculations for errors and omissions, and prepares review comments.

Performs inspections of street, sidewalk, water, and sewer projects under supervision of the Project Engineer.  Maintains written logs of progress, work accomplished, discussions with contractors, and field conditions.  Documents noncompliance with plans and specifications.

Assists other department personnel in conducting materials testing and analysis.

Assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum requirements to competently perform the key responsibilities of this job in terms of educational background, work experience, licenses/certifications, physical requirements and other knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Must have completed at least one (1) year of studies in a Bachelor’s Degree program for Civil Engineering.  Must maintain progress towards completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in that program.
  • Must have ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. 
  • Must possess strong organization, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Must be capable of performing at a mathematical level of College Algebra and Trigonometry.
  • Must be computer literate and fluent in use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and CAD programs such as Microstation. 
  • Must possess valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to perform in various weather conditions and traverse rough terrain.
  • Must have basic understanding and use of survey equipment, such as a level, rod, and measuring wheel.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
