POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates and maintains the City’s water distribution system in accordance with accepted standards, the policies of the Public Works Department, applicable laws, and State or Federal regulations by performing the duties listed herein.

 

Hourly Rate: $31.70 after a 6 month training period

 

Medical/Dental/Vision are covered 100% for the employee and begins on 1st day of employment

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Constructs, maintains and repairs water distribution system consisting of water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, valves, and meters.

 

Operates heavy equipment, backhoes, trenchers, boring machines, dump trucks, and other equipment used in maintenance of water distribution system.

 

Performs utility locates (J.U.L.I.E.).

 

Reads water meters and enters data into the computerized data collector.  

 

Utilizes hand tools in excavating and repairing water distribution system.

 

Assists other Public Works Department divisions when necessary.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to obtain a commercial drivers license (CDL) within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must have ability to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and 2 ½ ton trucks.
  • Must be able to work overtime, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be available for twenty-four (24) hour call out.
  • Must be able to obtain a State of IL Water Operator’s License.
  • Must be able to speak, hear, write, and communicate effectively and clearly in English.
  • Must have ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to operate equipment and drive during day and night hours in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk, stand and perform hard manual labor for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to traverse rough terrain.
  • Must be able to routinely lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds, or occasionally up to one hundred (100) pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to perform climbing, pulling and other labor intensive activities including moving, bending, squatting, lifting, carrying and stretching freely with little or no discomfort.
  • Ability to reach high, overhead levels and low floor levels by either reach and/or use of ladder or equipment, or by bending of the back or knees.
