POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for minor surveying and design projects; traffic studies; reviewing project plans and specifications; data collection; and updating City base maps.  Reviews plans and performs inspections of public infrastructure projects under construction.  Assists other department personnel as required.  

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development of maintenance and repair projects, surveying, preparation of plans and specifications, and bid package preparation.  Prepares detailed dimensional drawings; calculates quantities of materials; develops detailed cost estimates.

 

Installation of traffic monitoring devices, collection and tabulation of data.

 

Development and maintenance of City maps and infrastructure inventory. 

 

Review of public infrastructure project plans and specifications prepared by A/E firms.  Verifies existing field conditions, checks calculations for errors and omissions, and prepares review comments.

 

Performs inspections of street, sidewalk, water, and sewer projects under supervision of the Assistant City Engineer/City Engineer.  Maintains written logs of progress, work accomplished, discussions with contractors, and field conditions.  Documents noncompliance with plans and specifications.

 

Assists with solutions to resident service requests.

 

Assists other department personnel as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. 
  • Experience in Public Works functions and public contracting preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to speak and respond politely, while demonstrating professional customer service skills and etiquette, to questions in individual and group settings.
  • Operates in accordance with City, State, and Federal Laws and regulations.
  • Basic understanding of IDOT Administrative Policies, Standards for Water and Sewer Construction, and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. 
  • Computer literate.  Fluent in the use of Microsoft Office required.  Experience with AutoCad Civil3D, Microsoft Outlook preferred.  Full understanding and use of survey equipment, such as a level, laser level, transit, rod, and field book required.  Experience with GPS equipment is preferred.
  • Must possess valid motor vehicle operator’s license with State of IL or MO.
  • Must have sufficient body mobility, flexibility and balance to perform at construction sites, wooded areas, and agricultural fields in various weather conditions; must be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds and traverse rough terrain.
