AIRPORT MECHANIC

MidAmerica St. Louis Airport (BLV)

Classification: Non-Exempt Status: Full Time

Reports to: Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor

Beginning Annual Salary Range: $27.78 per hour

SUMMARY

The position is responsible for skilled work in the preventive maintenance and repair of all motor vehicle equipment and performs federally mandated yearly certifications on airport firefighting apparatus.  Performs repairs and maintenance on all ground support equipment (GSE) and other equipment as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Services and repairs all airport vehicles and motorized equipment including specialized equipment such as aircraft GSE, snowplows, snow blowers, sprayers, public safety vehicles, sand spreaders, mowers, and tractors.
  • May fabricate specialized parts and devices to perform equipment repairs or meet facility and operational needs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all vehicles.
  • Installs accessory equipment.
  • Maintains tool and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs duties in accordance with airport safety rules, regulations, and practices.
  • Reports irregularities and abnormal conditions.
  • Assists in the training of other employees.
  • Assists employees of equal or higher classification.
  • Operates snow removal equipment and performs snow removal duties as required.
  • Provide input for long term vehicle replacement program to include end of life, replacement and acquisition of fleet vehicles.
  • Must be able to work in highly elevated locations such as in a boom/basket of deicing truck when making repairs and adjustments to the equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Experience with vehicle air conditioning systems and skills in computer-controlled BUS logic diagnostics.
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to repair and maintain gasoline and diesel engine heavy- duty trucks and equipment.
  • Ability to accurately maintain records for vehicles, spare parts, maintenance schedules.
  • Knowledge of airport fire trucks operation, repair and regulations of operation.
  • Must be able to learn and utilize radio equipment and communicate accurately with the air traffic control tower.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer utilizing Microsoft Office software.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing both internally and externally and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must be adaptable to changing situations with ability to work positively with other department staff, tenants, regulatory entities, and the public.

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High school equivalent education with at least 2 years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, including diesel engines, hydraulics, heavy-truck, and equipment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

ASE Certification desired but not required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an airport-issued security ID badge.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Scott Air Force Base security ID badge.
  • Must have and maintain an Illinois Class B commercial driver’s license with airbrake endorsement.
  • Must be available to be on-call and respond timely after hours when designated, and in the event of recall for weather related events and emergencies.

 

BASIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, and driving required.  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
