Job Title: Youth Services Assistant

Edwardsville Public Library

 

Accountability: Head Librarian of Youth Services

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head Librarian of Youth Services and the Youth Services Librarian in planning and providing special events, which will encourage children to appreciate books, reading and self-expression, i.e. story times, summer reading program, puppet shows and other literature activities
  • Assist in the provision of library services, i.e. circulation, reference, reader’s advisory, computer assistance and perform other activities as needed
  • Assist the Youth Services Librarian with designing and preparing program-related art materials, i.e. bulletin boards, posters, and decorations
  • Create promotional flyers for all Youth Services events, news, and regular programming
  • Promote the library and its activities through public relations and community outreach

 

Skills and Education Requirements:

  • A minimum of an associate college degree with library experience or course work
  • Experience in programming for children
  • Experience in telling and reading stories for groups
  • Basic computer literacy skills

 

Relationships:

The Youth Services Assistant may attend and participate in continuing education that may include storytelling workshops, youth services meetings and conferences as budgets and schedules permit.

Needed attributes:

Strong public service attitude, patience, flexibility, willingness to learn new technology, interest in and knowledge of both classic and current children’s literature, ability to select age-appropriate programming, ability to create new programs, basic artistic skills, ability to tell stories and assist in puppet plays.
